Born on All Hallows Eve: October 31, 1795
Died on this day: 23 February 1821
Portrayed here by Ben Whishaw
with Abbie Cornish as Fanny Brawne
in the biopic Bright Star (like the sonnet, 1819)
In a slightly earlier sonnet (1818),
Keats describes what, sadly, will become
the truth of his life, cut short by illness:
When I have fears that I may cease to be
Before my pen has glean'd my teeming brain,
Before high-piled books, in charact'ry,
Hold like rich garners the full-ripen'd grain;
When I behold, upon the night's starr'd face,
Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,
And think that I may never live to trace
Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance . . .
