Hail Jeopardy! Hail Purdue!

Just hanging out, eating dinner in front of the television and watching our favorite show, when what to our wondering eyes should appear but a few answers to which Gerry and I definitely knew the questions!

We love it when that happens! Once back in November 2015, again in mid - July 2016, and, most recently, tonight:

Q: Who is John Purdue?

Q: What is Purdue?

Q: What is Computer Science?

Robert Redford & Judy Garland!

Kale, Caesar!

  1. Did anyone happen to notice that one night last week on Jeopardy, none of the three contestants -- despite their intelligence and advanced educations -- could recognize the last line of the Declaration of Independence. So sad.

  4. From a friend ~ April 2020

As some of you know, our son qualified for this year's Jeopardy College Championship this year. (He was the only freshman to qualify.) I was lucky enough to accompany him to LA - more specifically to Culver City where the Sony Studios are located - in February, and they're getting ready to air the games over the next two weeks.

I can't tell you how he did, but I can tell you the format of the games, and when his first round game is going to be televised. Here's the format:

The shows are going to be broadcast April 6-10, and 13-17 on your local ABC affiliate.

    QUARTERFINALS:
15 players were selected for the quarter finals. With three contestants a game, one game a day, that takes up the first week.
First-round match is on Thursday, April 9.

    SEMI-FINALS:
These are shown M-W, April 13-15.
In order to get three contestants for the finals, they needed to play three semi-final matches, which meant 9 players.
They supplemented the five winners with the four non-winning contestants with the highest scores.

FINALS: The finals are Th-F, April 16-17.
The matches were filmed in two days, and I got to see all of them. It was great watching the drama unfold, nerve-wracking at times, exhilarating at other times. The young men and women were amazing. Over 18,000 applied online, 250 were chosen to go to regional centers and compete to be on air, 15 got to go to CA. I'm looking forward to watching all the matches again, and reliving all the drama that was on the stage. The contestants' families all stood in line, and sat in the studio, together both days, so there was a lot of drama there as well.

We are, naturally, quite proud of this accomplishment. I told him before we went that he had already won and was playing on house money. While that was true, naturally he went there like everyone else: wanting to win. Watching the whole series is a great Shelter in Place activity for the whole family, so break out the tv trays and play along next week.
